Curriculum Overview
Year 3 Summer term
This half term our topic is ‘Lights, camera, action’. Through this topic we will look at a variety of film genres and specific films including the works of Walt Disney and The Secret Garden adapted from the famous text written by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
Our topic will explore the use of animations. The children will evaluate animated films and use our class text, ‘I can’t wait to be on T.V’, as a stimulus to create their own set, characters and, ultimately, stop frame animation. In addition, children will enhance their musical abilities by creating group compositions to accompany short silent films and will begin to record their work using graphic notation. We will be looking at Disney characters in art and aiming to replicate and create our own using the style of Walt Disney’s films. We will also be looking at adding detail to sketches and using charcoal to create images of The Titanic.
A historical element will be explored through the studying of the Titanic. Children will research the lives of some of the passengers and will perform many drama and research activities to gain an insight into life aboard the ship. This knowledge will transfer into written work such as descriptions, diary entries and poetry. We will continue to work upon handwriting with the hope of all children being able to join in a legible, cursive style.
In Maths, we will continue to develop strategies to solve calculations including all four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). We will apply these strategies to solve problems using written methods. We will introduce methods for written multiplication and revisit past methods for the other 4 operations. In addition we will continue to rehearse times table facts for all times tables. We will look at perimeter and link this to our topic by creating our very own ‘Secret gardens’ and calculating the perimeter of the different areas. We aim to use our outdoor learning space more this half term and will do so when looking at 2D and 3D shapes particularly. PE this term will involve swimming for 3AP where children will work towards earning new swimming badges. 3AEP will continue with dance/games for this term, developing and refining their coordination skills. Both classes will receive a team building session also.
In French we will look at animals, learning songs and games to acquire and consolidate new vocabulary. Science lessons will cover the features of plants and investigations into making plants grow.
We look forward to sharing our work with you during Summer Term parent consultation meetings.
